One thing I love about X, formerly Twitter, is the fashion content that comes across my feed. There are specifically two or three accounts I follow that are always on the runways. They feel heaven-sent when it comes to gathering the best looks from fashion shows.
But it begs the question: Why isn’t the fashion week schedule clearer?
When you have something as significant as Fashion Week, which we all glamorize, you would think there would be an easier way to keep track of it. But unless you’re studying the field or living and breathing fashion every day, you probably don’t have all the dates memorized. You just kind of stumble across things.
Maybe you’re like me and occasionally stop by Vogue Runway or Women’s Wear Daily to get your little runway scoop before returning to the reality of your day-to-day life.
As I think about this from a artist and branding perspective, I’ve also been obsessed with a new series of creative art directors coming together on YouTube to explain their physical print publications.
If you don’t know much about Figma, let me give you a little introduction. Figma is a platform where you can gather your photos, notes, information, and projects and organize them into groups or separate sections. It makes everything feel cohesive and easy to work with.
At SCAD, I’ve learned Figma inside and out over the past year. I’ve even spent time intentionally learning Figma animations and exploring features that you might associate with Adobe’s creative software.
And especially for my new designers out there who are thinking, “I really can’t afford an Adobe subscription right now,” I completely understand. I would personally recommend checking out the Figma series I’ll list below as a reference. You can apply many of the same design principles across different publishing platforms.
It’s like when people say you don’t need an expensive camera to start learning photography. The same applies to editorial design and media that require a more hands-on, creative approach. Not everything can be accomplished by simply manipulating a template in Canva.
Of course, there are hundreds and hundreds of YouTube videos you can research, watch, and take notes on. But designing isn’t quite like studying a history textbook. It’s something you have to practice. Even visually sketching out how you would design a publication is better than simply studying information, especially if you’re a visual learner.
Now, turning back to my original question: Why are these lovely fashion shows something I often discover through viral posts, passing social media content, or intentionally visiting major fashion publications?
Why can’t there be a beautiful, accessible calendar that brings everything together?
And yes, I know there are already fashion calendars out there. I’m not living under a rock, you guys! I know there are beautiful calendars that help people keep track of the fashion industry and its many events. But as we move further into an era where physical media and tangible creative experiences are becoming increasingly meaningful, I started thinking about how I could contribute something of my own.
What if I created a monthly spread using Figma or Canva? Something clean, visually appealing, and designed well enough to feel like a published editorial rather than just another calendar.
I started thinking, Why can’t we do this?
I love the idea of cherishing moments and having something to celebrate. As I move further into my twenties—which sometimes feels like the arc of the Dark Ages, lol—I’ve started to appreciate the little things that give my life structure and excitement.
Maybe it’s reading a book, planning something new, or having an event to look forward to. Some people might consider these things unnecessary, but for me, they’re fulfilling. They keep me motivated and give me something to anticipate.
And for me, that something is fashion shows and Fashion Week.
So, get ready to get your hands on the first drop of my fashion calendar, coming soon! I’m still taking some time to research and put everything together.
I know there are specific months dedicated to major fashion events, including New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, Copenhagen Fashion Week, and so many others. There are also more specialized events, from denim-focused showcases to fashion weeks highlighting particular cities, markets, and creative communities.
There is so much happening in fashion that it can be difficult to keep up with everything.
I remember having an entire back-and-forth conversation with ChatGPT at one point, asking it to give me the dates of fashion weeks around the world.
To the average person, fashion might just mean going online and buying something from SHEIN. But what people don’t always realize about the mass market is that fashion weeks often serve as a blueprint for the trends, ideas, and designs that eventually influence what we see in stores.
I also think many small creatives overlook legacy brands. And I get it! As Gen Z, we sometimes want to individualize ourselves so much that we act as though we could never learn anything from established fashion houses. We make things by hand, create our own identities, and want to do things differently.
And I understand that. Individuality is so much value in creating something that feels uniquely yours. But there is also value in studying the people and brands that came before us.
Even if I haven’t gotten around to publishing my lovely Five Things to Know About This Fashion Designer runway series, there are still designers I want to explore. Sometimes, I simply haven’t had the time because I’m busy composing a look, developing a unisex look, or working on another fashion illustration.
You guys know all my tears and triumphs! And I do all of this by myself—me, myself, and I.
So, all that rambling aside, the fashion calendar series will be coming soon!
As for the accompanying mini-post series, the details are still up in the air. And I mean that seriously! I want to take my time and give you guys quality content rather than rush something out just to have it posted.
And to all the new people who are slowly joining this community, hi! My name is Nyla, and this is Love Chic Lifestyle
